Retail Assistant – Hope Costumes & Thrift Store

Hope Costumes & Thrift Store is looking for a Retail Assistant to join our friendly team.

This role may be offered as one full-time position or divided into a couple of part-time positions or casual positions, depending on the right applicants and availability. The successful applicant/s will work across various shifts from Monday to Saturday.

This is a hands-on retail role in a vibrant social enterprise that is about much more than selling clothes and costumes. Our store helps support the wider work of Teen Challenge Tasmania while also creating a welcoming place for customers, volunteers and young people to connect, learn and grow.

About the role

The Retail Assistant will support the Store Manager with the day-to-day running of the store, including customer service, point-of-sale, stock presentation, sorting and pricing donations, merchandising, costume hire support and maintaining a clean, organised and welcoming retail space.

You will be part of a purpose-driven environment where people matter. The right person will enjoy working with customers, relate well to volunteers and young people and be willing to jump in wherever needed.

We are looking for someone who is:

Friendly, reliable and customer-focused
Comfortable working in a busy retail environment
A team player with a positive attitude
Organised and willing to learn
Able to work across various shifts Monday to Saturday

Volunteer Support Needed

We regularly welcome volunteers in areas such as:

Youth Mentoring Support

Support young people through encouragement, consistency and positive connection as part of our mentoring and youth-focused programs.

Our Place Safe Space Support

Help create a warm, safe after-school environment for young people in Launceston CBD through conversation, supervision, hospitality and practical support.

Event Support

Assist with fundraising events, community events, set-up and pack-down, guest welcome, ticketing, serving and general event help.

BBQ Volunteers

Join our team at community BBQ fundraisers by helping with cooking, serving, set-up and pack-down.

Catering Support

Help prepare, pack, present, or deliver catering orders, or contribute baking and food preparation support behind the scenes.

Retail / Op Shop Support

Assist in Hope Costumes & Thrift Store with customer service, sorting, merchandising and helping create a welcoming shopping environment.

Hospitality Support

Support Hope Cafe and related hospitality initiatives through food preparation, service assistance, kitchen help, or customer interaction.

Administration Support

Provide practical office help with data entry, phone calls, filing, preparation of materials and general administrative tasks.

Practical / Maintenance Help

Assist with cleaning, basic maintenance, venue presentation, transport and other practical hands-on needs across our sites and programs.

Specialist Volunteer Support

We also value volunteers with professional skills in areas such as marketing, photography, videography, design, fundraising, youth support, governance, mentoring and business networking.
