Dylan's Story (Australia)

2018 Dylans Photo.png

I had former addictions to ice and other drugs like marijuana and alcohol addictions that were going on well before my teens. They just got worse over the years. I also got into criminal activities and was in and out of court rooms a lot when I was younger, in and out of hospitals for things – just not going down a very good path.

I got to a turning point in my life when I was sleeping on a concrete floor at the back of an abandoned house and I thought I’m sick of doing this and so I thought I might give Teen Challenge a go. Since coming here Teen Challenge has done heaps for me, they’ve helped me so much. They’ve helped me to work on myself, the case workers have been great, they’ve given me a lot of time and put a lot of effort into my recovery. It wasn’t just something I’d done on my own, it’s something I’d done through the staff and through God and it was really great the help that I got here.

Mel's Story (Australia)

Before coming to Teen Challenge, I was in and out of an abusive relationship which was built on drinking, and taking marijuana and methamphetamine. I came to Teen Challenge to find purpose in life, stop the cycle of abuse and drugs, and find a life free of substances.

Before arriving at Teen Challenge I was expecting a clinical facility but was surprised at how beautiful and home-like the New Life Women's Centre was. Everyone was friendly and I was embraced and felt supported.

When I came into the program, life really began to change for me. It was a full on year of regaining my identity, learning to live without drugs, knowing who I was without drugs, dealing with underlying issues and forgiving myself, along with others.

Through the program I found a new way of thinking and dealing with my issues. The team at Teen Challenge helped me go through a healing process and to change my thinking from negative to positive through support and encouragement. I formed a strong relationship with God and honestly the biggest lesson I've learned is that I can't do life alone and that with God in my life, all things are possible.

It was definitely the best decision I could have made to enter the Teen Challenge program. To this day I can’t believe the healing that has taken place in my mind, body and soul. Those dreams I once had as a little girl are now becoming my reality! And the confidence I have now is possible without drugs.

After finishing the program I continue to live free from drugs, with a clear mindset and a passion to help others. I have completed two years of studies and now have a job helping young people deal with life issues.

Teen Challenge has made the impossible possible for me and I will be forever grateful. My possibilities are endless, I live a life of freedom and I am living proof that anyone can change!

Mikey's Story (Australia)

I was addicted to methamphetamines as well as oxycontin. It had completely destroyed my life and all my relationships I had. My family began to lose hope in me and to be honest I began to lose hope in myself. When I came to Teen Challenge I was weak and skinny and I guess I didn’t know who I was. I had a complete identity crisis going on in my life.

I don’t know where I would be if it wasn’t here. If I wasn’t here I’m afraid to say that I’d probably be either in jail or dead. But the blessing is this place is here and it’s because of the people that volunteer or help fund this place that it’s still able to run, that it’s still able to be that light on a hill for people that are so desperate for hope.

Ellie's Story (Australia)

2018 Ellie Photo.png

Before I came to Teen Challenge my life was a mess. When I was 13 I developed depression which turned into self-harming, an eating disorder, drinking and dabbling in drugs by age 14. I was struggling with severe depression but I don’t like to hurt people or upset them so I didn’t tell anyone about my struggles.

Coming from such a loving family they were constantly wanting to know what was going on. But I knew that what I was doing was unhealthy so I just continued to lie to them, which is all part of a mental health and addiction.

At 16 I was at my worse. Mum had lost all hope, she didn’t know what to do anymore. She’d been trying for years. She would come in and talk to me, wake me from my naps, make my favourite foods for me to try eat because my lies and the stories I was telling people were falling apart. People were starting to see. This is when my mum found Teen Challenge QLD and she had hope again.

Since coming into the program I still had some bad times, but now I knew how to acknowledge them, face them, fight them and fix them. I learned that I don’t have to do things alone. When I graduated it was the best day of my life. I had never completed anything and I finally finished something in my life. And it’s not just something, it’s pretty huge. I had fought to get my life back, and I mean fight. But I did it for myself and that’s the biggest thing.

My life after Teen Challenge is incredible. I no longer depend on negative ways to feel things. I am genuinely happy with who I am and where I am in the world. I have been given such incredible friendships through the program that I couldn’t have found anywhere else and it’s just incredible I have been in a job now for two and half years since finishing the program. I'm just so thankful for everything.

But the most incredible thing is that I love myself and I love my life. I know that with the tools and the strategies I was taught that I don’t have to go backwards ever. I can face issues and come out on top, stronger every time.

I know that Teen Challenge saves lives. It saved mine.

I have always been very boy-crazy, but at age 14, I was raped not once, but twice. Perhaps that offset the panic attacks I began having.. I have always had a very low self-esteem. Couple that with 10+ years of anxiety and panic "disorder", and it is no surprise that I took a liking to drugs. In 2006, I started using cocaine heavily. After only a few months, I found myself using my anxiety medication to give me the courage to try out as a dancer
